Today we’ll explore the spectacular island of Langøya, following one of Vesterålen’s most scenic coastal roads as it winds between rugged mountains and the open Norwegian Sea towards the tiny fishing village of Nyksund.
Once one of the region’s busiest fishing ports, Nyksund was almost completely abandoned during the 1970s when larger fishing vessels could no longer use its small harbour. Today it has been carefully restored and reinvented as a thriving artistic and cultural community, where colourful waterfront buildings, galleries and cafés sit alongside reminders of its rich maritime past.
With a permanent population of only around 30 people, Nyksund feels wonderfully remote. Wooden boardwalks connect the old quays, fishing buildings and harbourside cottages, while beyond them the powerful Norwegian Sea constantly reminds visitors why life here has always been both beautiful and challenging. It’s a place with an atmosphere unlike anywhere else in Northern Norway and a favourite destination for photographers.
We’ll have time to wander through the village, browse its unique character, and stop for lunch or coffee overlooking the harbour. The homemade Norwegian waffles are particularly worth trying!
As always, the journey itself is part of the experience. We’ll make regular stops whenever conditions allow, giving you the opportunity to photograph dramatic coastlines, mountain scenery and hidden viewpoints that many visitors to this part of Norway never discover.
There are a few options for us to stop at fuel stations whilst en-route and there are also toilet facilities in Nyksund.
